Password Management Applications
- Lastpass.com This application was created by the vendor that supplies our remote support tool that we use here at HTG. The company has a good reputation and offers a product that is free to use, and also has supported paid versions starting as low as 3 dollars a month and could be used by families. We also chose this product because it has clients that allow you access to your passwords from mobile devices, such as apple and android phones and tablets. You can also add browser pluging to help automate signing into websites that require complex passwords.
- Keepass is a long standing trusted open source database that can be installed and carried on a usb key. So for those of you that do not trust keeping your passwords on the cloud, this could very well be the tool for you. While overall it’s pretty easy to use, it does not have apps for your mobile devices, and could require some more complex setups like keeping your database file on a file share like onedrive. Also because of it’s open source roots, there are a number of folks that have developed plugins to allow it’s use on Andriod or IOS platforms, but we can’t vouch for the foks that developed these free plugins. So we only recomend this approach for the more technical savy users that understand the risks. Overall we think keypass is a great tool to keep your passwords safe, but off the web on a usb key safely in your control.
- Password State. This is the tool HTG is using to manage our passwords at helptech group. This product really is geared more toward a business that has more complicated password needs. It can be installed for any of our clients that feel they need this kind of a tool for internal use. Let us know if you’d like to know more.
- Secret Server. We used this password management tools for years. Overall it’s a good product, but we haven’t seen it evolve much and when looking at our internal needs we felt it was time for a change.
